You've found a Shopify store with exactly the look you want for your own. The good news: Shopify adds the theme's name to every storefront, so you can find it in seconds.

This guide shows the quick way with a free detector, the manual way with your browser, and what to do when the theme is custom.

The Quick Way: Use a Shopify Theme Detector

Paste the store's address into the free Shopify Theme Detector. It shows:

  • the original theme, such as Dawn, Impulse or Prestige;
  • the name the store gave its copy, such as "Dawn - Summer Sale";
  • the theme version;
  • whether it's from the Shopify Theme Store;
  • the apps and scripts it can see, and where the store is hosted.

No browser extension or sign-up is needed.

The Manual Way: Read the Page Code

You can find the same information yourself on a computer:

  1. Open the store in your browser.
  2. Right-click the page and choose View Page Source, or press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac).
  3. Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F) and search for Shopify.theme.

You'll find a line like this:

Shopify.theme = {"name":"Dawn - Summer Sale","id":123456789,"schema_name":"Dawn","schema_version":"15.2.0","theme_store_id":887,"role":"main"};

What each part means:

  • name: the store's own name for its copy of the theme.
  • schema_name: the original theme's name. This is the one you can install.
  • schema_version: the theme version.
  • theme_store_id: the theme's ID in the Shopify Theme Store. If it's null, the theme wasn't installed from the Theme Store.

Why Stores Show Two Theme Names

Store owners usually duplicate their live theme before changing it, so they can undo mistakes, and the copy gets a new name. Seasonal versions are common too: "Impulse - Black Friday", "Impulse - Holiday". The original theme name (schema_name) is what matters if you want the same theme.

When the Theme Is Custom

If there's no Theme Store ID, the theme is one of these:

  • A third-party theme, sold on a marketplace such as ThemeForest. The original name usually leads you to it with a quick search.
  • A custom theme, built for that brand by an agency. Large brands often have one. You can't buy it, but you can usually find a Theme Store theme with a similar layout and adjust colours and fonts.

Finding a Store's Apps

Apps that show something on the page, such as reviews, chat, pop-ups or loyalty widgets, load their own scripts. The detector's Technologies list names many of them. Apps that only work in the admin area or at checkout can't be seen from outside.

When It Isn't Shopify at All

If neither the detector nor the page source shows Shopify, the store runs on something else, such as WooCommerce, BigCommerce or Squarespace. The detector names the platform when it can. For WordPress and WooCommerce stores, use the WordPress Theme Detector instead.

Summary

  • The fastest way is the free Shopify Theme Detector.
  • By hand, view the page source and search for Shopify.theme.
  • schema_name is the original theme; name is the store's own label.
  • No Theme Store ID means a third-party or custom theme.
