Free KDP Cover Size Calculator
Enter your trim size, page count and paper type to get the exact full-wrap cover size for an Amazon KDP paperback, including bleed and spine width. Then download a template that shows the bleed, trim lines, spine folds, safe areas and barcode space, and design your cover on top of it in Canva, Photoshop, Affinity or InDesign.
The KDP Cover Formula
- Cover width = 0.125" bleed + trim width (back) + spine width + trim width (front) + 0.125" bleed
- Cover height = 0.125" bleed + trim height + 0.125" bleed
- Spine width = page count × paper thickness
| Ink and paper | Thickness per page |
|---|---|
| Black ink, white paper | 0.002252" (0.0572 mm) |
| Black ink, cream paper | 0.0025" (0.0635 mm) |
| Standard color, white paper | 0.002252" (0.0572 mm) |
| Premium color, white paper | 0.002347" (0.0596 mm) |
Example: 6 x 9 Book With 300 Pages
On white paper the spine is 300 × 0.002252 = 0.676". The full cover is 0.125 + 6 + 0.676 + 6 + 0.125 = 12.926" wide by 9 + 0.25 = 9.25" tall. At 300 DPI that's 3,878 × 2,775 pixels. On cream paper the spine grows to 0.75".
KDP Cover Requirements
- One PDF page with the back cover, spine and front cover together.

- All fonts embedded, transparencies flattened, and no crop marks or template guides.
- Text at least 0.125" inside the trim, and at least 7 pt.
- Spine text only for books with 79 pages or more, with 0.0625" clearance from each spine edge.
- No password or encryption, and ideally under 40 MB (650 MB maximum).
Check Your Cover Before You Upload
KDP only finds cover problems after you upload and wait for the previewer. Run your finished PDF through the cover check above first. It catches the most common rejections: a missing bleed, a spine built for the wrong page count, fonts that aren't embedded and low-resolution images.
Also publishing through IngramSpark? Their spine widths are different, so use the IngramSpark cover template. To check the images inside your interior file, use the PDF DPI checker.
