An MHTML file packages a saved web page and many of its supporting resources into one archive. That is useful for preserving a page, but .mhtml and .mht files are not as easy to share or open as PDFs.

This guide explains how to convert an MHTML or MHT file to PDF, including web archives saved by Microsoft Edge.

MHTML Versus MHT

MHTML stands for MIME HTML. The .mhtml and .mht extensions refer to the same general web archive format; different browsers and applications simply prefer different extensions.

An archive may contain:

  • the page's HTML;
  • embedded images;
  • style sheets and formatting;
  • metadata about the saved page.

It may not preserve every interactive or remote feature. Scripts, video, forms, animation and resources that were not embedded can behave differently from the live website.

Convert MHTML to PDF Online

Convert a Microsoft Edge MHTML Document

Microsoft Edge may save a web page as an MHTML document or single-file web archive. If the saved file ends in .mhtml or .mht, it can be selected directly in the converter.

If the archive already opens correctly in Edge, you can also try the browser's built-in print route:

  1. Open the MHTML file in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Open the print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
  3. Choose Save as PDF as the printer or destination.
  4. Review orientation, scale, margins and page range.
  5. Save the PDF.

The built-in method is convenient when Edge renders the archive correctly. The online converter is useful when you want a separate preview, an automatic download option or local conversion in another compatible browser.

Why Does the PDF Look Different?

A PDF is a static page format, while the source was originally designed for a browser window. Differences can occur when:

  • the archive did not embed a remote image or style;
  • the original page used scripts to build content;
  • responsive styles change at the converter's rendering width;
  • a long page must be divided into fixed PDF pages;
  • a custom web font is unavailable.

Try the browser Save as PDF option if the automatic PDF has awkward page breaks. Print settings often provide better control over scale, paper size and orientation.

Privacy and Large Files
